Schweppes

In 1783 Johann Schweppe from Geneva made the World’s first carbonated soft drink. It took Schweppes more than 200 years to develop a cola, however.

According to legend Schweppes Cola was initially released in 1985 in Australia and later became available in rest of the World. In 2000 Schweppes got the rights to produce Pepsi in Australia and therefore discontinued their own cola.

As of 2020 Schweppes Cola still exists but to me it is uncertain on which markets it is available.

Schweppes Cola, 330 ml can

In 1969 Schweppes Company merged with confectionary company Cadbury’s to become Cadbury Schweppes. This company was split in 2008 and the Schweppes trademark was sold to various companies.

  • In USA Schweppes is owned by Keurig Dr Pepper (formerly Dr Pepper Snapple Group).
  • In Australia the trademark is owned by Japanese Asahi Group.
  • The Coca-Cola Company owns the Schweppes trademark in the UK and New Zealand.
  • Schweppes International Limited owns the brand in all of Europe except for UK.
