SPAR enjoy Bio-Cola
Marketed as an alternative to mainstream cola, SPAR enjoy Bio-Cola was launched in November 2017. The product was introduced by SPAR, a supermarket group based in Amsterdam and active in almost 50 countries. The cola itself was developed in Salzburg as part of SPAR Austria’s “Young & Urban” range, a product line aimed at younger, city-based consumers.
The range includes items such as palm-oil-free soap, vegan ice cream, and tofu made from non-GMO soy. These products are presented as organic, free from additives, and produced by small suppliers. SPAR enjoy Bio-Cola fits this profile with a stated sugar content of 8.4 g per 100 ml, slightly lower than the 10–11 g commonly found in standard colas.
Storytelling, however, is where the volume is turned up. According to SPAR, this cola is made by a pharmacist from Salzburg who rediscovered a more than 100 year old local cola recipe and adapted it for modern use. The drink is completed with spring water from the Hohe Tauern mountain range. The result is a private-label cola from 2017, carefully framed as a drink from an ancient past.
