Campa Cola

Introduced in India in 1977, Campa Cola entered the market at a moment when The Coca-Cola Company had withdrawn from the country following changes in Indian foreign investment regulations. The brand was launched by Pure Drinks, a Delhi-based soft drink producer that had previously operated as a Coca-Cola bottler in India. With American cola brands absent from the market, Campa Cola quickly achieved wide distribution and became one of the most prominent cola drinks in India during the late 1970s and 1980s.

The original Campa Cola appeared in several different designs over the years.

The situation changed in the late 1980s and early 1990s, when PepsiCo entered the Indian market through joint ventures, followed by Coca-Cola’s return in 1993. This marked the beginning of a period of intensified competition in the Indian soft drink sector. As the multinational companies expanded production, distribution, and marketing, Campa Cola gradually lost market share. At that point, Campa Cola shared a common trajectory with Thums Up, another Indian cola launched in 1977 in the wake of Coca-Cola’s exit. Their paths diverged with the return of American brands: Thums Up was acquired by Coca-Cola and used as an entry point to the Indian market, while Campa Cola remained in Indian ownership.

Around 2000–2001, Pure Drinks ceased active nationwide production and distribution of Campa Cola. The company closed its main bottling facilities and shifted to a model where the brand was produced under license by local bottlers, primarily in northern India. Production volumes during this phase were limited, and the brand’s presence in the broader Indian market became marginal.

In 2022, the Campa trademark was acquired by Reliance Consumer Products Ltd. In March 2023, the company announced a relaunch of the brand, presenting Campa Cola as part of a broader soft drink range that also included orange and lemon variants, with the stated intention of restoring nationwide distribution. The relaunch attracted public attention and was widely seen as a nostalgic return.

Campa Cola was relaunched in 2023 as part of the familiar soft drink trio: cola, orange, and lemon.
