The film takes place in a future United States which has become a totalitarian police state and the government pacifies the populace with violent TV shows. The most popular show is The Running Man in which criminals can earn their freedom if they can stay alive for three hours while being chased by professional hitmen.

Cadre Cola is one of the game show’s sponsors and both a TV advertisement and a billboard ad is seen in the film.

Cadre Cola’s name is a reference to the future elite which is known as Cadre.
