Bergische Kola, Haaner Kola

A regional cola from Germany, Bergische Kola was introduced in late summer 2021 by the mineral water company Haaner Felsenquelle. It replaced the long-standing Haaner Kola, which had been sold for decades. Both the former and the current cola contain 8.38 g of sugar per 100 ml, noticeably below the usual 10–11 g in most colas. This suggests that the change was more a matter of rebranding than of creating a completely new recipe.

The producer, Haaner Felsenquelle, is a family-owned bottler and mineral water company based in Haan, North Rhine-Westphalia. The firm traces its history back to 1909, when a local spring was first developed for commercial bottling. Over the 20th century the company built up a wide portfolio of lemonades, spritzers, and soft drinks in addition to its core mineral waters. It remains closely tied to the Bergisches Land region, which also gave the cola its present name.

Earlier under the Haaner Kola label, the company offered a sugar-free version (Null Zucker) and a cola-mix combining cola with orange soda. With the shift to Bergische Kola, the line has been reduced to the standard cola and a sugar-free variant. The drink is distributed regionally, continuing the producer’s focus on its home market rather than national competition.

Haaner Kola was rebranded as Bergishe Kola in 2021.
